The Working Group of Sustainable Development is appointed to advance sustainable development in research, education and in societal communication and is also responsible for the guidance and supervision of those.

The working group’s tasks include: - Guiding and counselling parties of the University of Oulu - Supervising actions of sustainable development and reporting about those to the management - Processing initiatives pertaining to sustainable development from the advisory committee - Supporting co-operation at the university and in the surrounding society with operators pertaining to the working group’s subject - Designing and observing the sustainable development and global responsibility programme of the University of Oulu

One member and one deputy member are elected for the working group for a two-year term. OYY’s Specialist in Social Affairs supports the student representatives in their work. Participation in the working group is voluntary work and does not award the participants study credits. The working group consists of mostly staff members, and students are represented by a student representative and a deputy student representative. The working group holds meetings approximately six times a year. Sara Jokiniemi (sara.jokiniemi@oulu.fi) acts as the Secretary of the Working Group of Sustainable Development.

The Board of OYY appoints the student representatives in December of 2021, and the representatives’ term begins in January of 2022. Eligible for the position are all students who have submitted their application by the deadline of the application process and are registered as attending by 31 November, 2021. The selected student representative must be registered as attending when serving as a representative.

Interest in or previous experience in work pertaining to sustainable development is considered a benefit. The selection process is conducted in accordance with the Act on Equality between Women and Men (609/1986).
