Place and date for decision making

The vice-chair participates in directing the activities of the Doctoral Students’ Section of the Student Union at the University of Oulu with the chair of the Section. The Doctoral Students’ Section is the collective voice and community of doctoral students across disciplines. The Section watches over University decision-making and doctoral training practices, proactively advocates doctoral students’ interests and well-being, and promotes doctoral students’ awareness of their rights and their ways of influencing University decision-making. The Section fosters a sense of belongingness and unity among doctoral students.

The Doctoral Students’ Section gathers approximately once in 1-2 months to discuss doctoral students’ points of view concerning the development of doctoral training. The task of the student representatives is to take doctoral students’ proposals and opinions forward. The Section also organizes events for doctoral students. The vice-chair participates in developing activities of the Section, communications and organizing events. When necessary, the vice-chair substitutes the chair of the Section.

The vice-chair is the vice-member of the UniOGS Management Group. The task of the UniOGS Management Group is to support the dean of UniOGS in leading and developing doctoral training and implementing the strategy of the University. The Management Group discusses e.g. the development of doctoral training processes, admission times and admission criteria and the amount of travel grants. Meetings are held approximately seven times per year.

The student representative positions offer an excellent opportunity to participate in University decision-making and the development and quality assurance of doctoral training. The positions demand responsibility, good interaction skills and motivation towards advocating doctoral students’ interests. The position of vice-chair also requires a will to invest time in taking care of and developing the activities of the Doctoral Students’ Section.

The applicant must be a student of UniOGS and enrolled as active for the up-coming semester. Good skills in Finnish and English and previous experience of advocacy are considered an advantage. The Student Union offers training for the task.

In your application, please explain in your own words what is the role of the Doctoral Students’ Section at the University of Oulu, why you should be selected for the position and what you would especially like to develop in doctoral training, the position of doctoral students and the activities of the Doctoral Students’ Section. Also mention what is your major and the stage of your doctoral studies.
