Place and date for decision making

We are looking for one vice member to the faculty council of the Faculty of Science for the ongoing term that ends 31 December 2021.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Faculty councils are multi-member administrative bodies of the faculties and chaired by the deans. The faculty councils are responsible for developing teaching and research at the faculties, controlling quality management of research and teaching, deciding on issues such as degree requirements, teaching schedules and student selection criteria as well as processing any far-reaching plans and other important matters of principle at the faculties. The faculty councils meet around once a month during academic terms. Further information on how the faculty councils operate is available in Flamma (https://flamma.helsinki.fi/en/group/matemaattis-luonnontieteellinen-tiedekunta/tiedekuntaneuvosto). According to the Universities Act, the administrative language of the University of Helsinki is Finnish, and due to this, the faculty councils work mainly in Finnish. However, it is possible to use other languages in the meetings as per agreement. A good command of Finnish is an advantage in the position.

As a member of a faculty council, you will get to influence the future direction of your faculty and discipline, make students’ voice heard and create useful networks at the same time. You can also receive credits for acting in faculty councils, and a fee is paid for attending the meetings.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES?

Student members of the faculty councils act as the voice of students in the University’s decision-making. There are only two clear requirements: you must be registered for attendance in the faculty in question, and you must not be in an employment relationship with the University that could be interpreted as a full-time one. No special skills are required in advance. Thoroughly reading the meeting material before the meeting, asking for the opinions of, depending on the situation, either your fellow students or subject organisation on the issues on the meeting agenda and discussing matters in the meeting itself are quite enough to be successful in the position. The Student Union also provides training for the selected student representatives in administration and offers its support and expertise for their work in University administration.

HOW DO I APPLY TO BECOME A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE? Applications should be submitted at www.halloped.fi by 23 August 2020. The application should clearly indicate your current major or degree programme and study orientation. We assume that you are available for the positions of both actual and vice member. The Student Union considers the following as advantages and requests that the applicants describe these aspects in their application:

1) Motivation towards the position

2) Understanding of current issues at the faculty

3) Contacts with a faculty or subject organisation

4) Previous experience of acting as a student representative in administration, as a study advisor or in some other position related to student advocacy work

The Student Union hopes to receive applications from representatives of different genders and people from different stages of their studies from diverse backgrounds. The Student Union strives to take into account the representation of different disciplines when making the selections.
